context of work:

A Figment of Your Imagination is a visual journey about overcoming fear and doubt. Through the lens of a male protagonist, we get a glimpse of inner thoughts from his dreams, how they affect how he goes about his daily life, and how powerful he can be when he escapes into the realm of an alternate reality which is his subconscious. The protagonist wakes from a troubling dream, and after carrying that weight all day he really digs into his subconscious to find the root which is a physical manifestation of self-doubt, worry, and fear. Along the path of his journey, he engages with some interesting characters who help him to realize that he is the one holding himself back from reaching his full potential. During my process, I allowed the artists in my cast to add their own interpretations of movement phrases, in an effort to create a movement vocabulary that they could draw from for improvisational practices during filming. The use of ski masks served multiple purposes: to grant the artists the “Power of Anonymity,” allowing them to draw from a more personal place without giving a second thought to how the movement will be perceived. The masks also prevent the audience from immediate facial recognition of the Artists, in an effort to add a degree of separation from the audience, to view the work as a whole rather than a personal performance from their peers.
