A figment of your Imagination
Statement of Purpose:
What happens when traditional and contemporary movements live off the stage? This question sparks a flame of curiosity that burns into a fire of infinite exploration. This work uses movement practices infused with pop culture to create a visual dance film, examining how the history of movement can influence the future of what I imagine commercialized dance to be. I took this opportunity to experiment with dance, music, and costumes in different settings and environments. I wanted to move away from viewing dance as individual styles and techniques, instead, witnessing the endless possibilities that become apparent when we view it all as one. I take elements from concert dance and move them off the stage, attempting to transport you into the universe within the work. I was able to use different approaches towards editing and filming to create a variety of experiences and angles to view the work. My goal was to explore what outcomes are possible when combining aspects of technique and style, to create organic movements as a means of expression for the artists I worked with. Through the process, I analyze how Dance/Movement can exist as one entity with influences from codified techniques such as classical ballet and traditional modern techniques. Dance does not have to be performed in the theatre on a stage; film can still be considered a performance even though the original footage has been edited and manipulated. My desire for the work is that the viewer becomes engulfed in a stimulating experience through the use of visual effects, movement, and music, offering a euphoric encounter for each individual.
